When using your Framework Laptop you might feel a slight tingle or vibration on your skin when resting your arms on the aluminum chassis. This can be a bit confusing for some users at first but this is a completely normal sensation to feel when your device is plugged in and charging. This is not limited to Framework Laptops but can be experienced when using any electronic with a metal chassis.

This phenomenon is a result of electrical leakage or improper grounding. It is completely harmless as long as the sensation remains as a slight tingle or vibration and could not be described as a shock. Typically, a good rule of thumb is if it makes you draw your arms back in pain, that is not normal and you should contact our support team.

**Why Does This Happen?**

Modern electronic devices, especially those with metal enclosures can build up small stray voltages on their surface.

Devices that are plugged into a two-prong (ungrounded) outlet may not have a path to safely dissipate this stray voltage. When you touch the aluminum, you create a path for that voltage (resulting in the tingling sensation) to reach the ground.

**Can I Avoid This?**

Typically the best way to avoid this is to use the Framework Power Adapter with your device as it is a grounded plug (3-Prong Plug). Though this could still happen with our adapter as external factors could be present.

Depending on the age of building or region that you live or work in the grounding element in your outlet could need to be fixed. You can test this by buying an outlet tester to confirm grounding in your home, if you are concerned.
