Height limitations when using double-sided SSD for Primary Storage

There are two SSD slots available on the Framework Laptop 16, the Primary Storage slot which supports both single sided and double sided M.2 2280 SSDs and the Secondary Storage slot which supports single sided M.2 2230 SSDs.

As these two slots are directly on top of one another we recommend that if you are installing an SSD in both slots to use single sided SSDs in both slots such as those listed on our Marketplace here to avoid clearance issues, however if you intend to use a double sided M.2 2280 SSD in the Primary Slot there are two combinations of dimensions that are technically possible:

  1. Primary Storage M.2 2280 SSD with a bottom side height of 0.7mm combined with Secondary Storage M.2 2230 SSD with a top height of 1.5mm.
  2. Primary Storage M.2 2280 SSD with a bottom side height of 1.35mm, combined with Secondary Storage M.2 2230 SSD with a top height of 1.35mm or 1.2mm.

Please note that these combinations only take into consideration the physical clearance of the SSDs when stacked together and not the thermal performance, and that there is no compatibility for double sided M.2 2230 SSDs in the Secondary Storage slot.
