Why is my fan making noise?

First, check if there is an application causing heavy CPU utilization.  In Windows 10, you can open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete and clicking Task Manager, or searching for Task Manager in the search bar in Windows.  Once in Task Manager, you can click on “More Details” at the bottom.  You’ll then be able to see whether your CPU load is at or near 100% and which application is causing that.  You can close the application or right click on it in Task Manager and select “End task” if it is unresponsive.


You can also adjust the power profile in Windows to trade off between higher performance with higher noise, a balance of performance and efficiency, or maximum efficiency.  In Windows 11 click on the battery icon in the status area of the task bar:

And then choose your preferred Power Mode from this menu:


For Windows 10 click on the battery icon in the status area of the task bar and adjust the slider to choose your power profile:
